Rekeying changes which key operates a compatible lock. Replacing a lock changes the hardware. If your existing locks work well and you want to stop an old key from working, rekeying may be suitable. If a lock is worn, damaged or missing a feature you need, consider repair or replacement after an assessment.
For a Salt Lake City homeowner, the useful starting question is: are you changing access, fixing a problem, or upgrading the door? Those are different goals, and they do not always require the same work.
| Question | Rekey | Replace |
|---|---|---|
| What changes? | The key combination; existing hardware stays. | The lock hardware. |
| Typical goal | Change which keys operate a working lock. | Fit suitable hardware or add a needed feature. |
| Hardware condition | Existing hardware must be suitable and working. | Consider after assessing wear, damage or an unsuitable lock. |
| Compatibility | The lock must support the requested key arrangement. | New hardware must fit the door and access needs. |
What changes when a lock is rekeyed?
Rekeying changes the key combination in a compatible keyed lock while retaining the existing hardware. The previous operating key should no longer work after the job is completed and tested. It does not automatically improve the lock’s construction, repair a damaged latch or strengthen the door frame.
Situations worth discussing include a move into a home, a missing key or a change in who should have access. Schlage’s guidance on when to rekey identifies changes in key access as reasons to consider rekeying. The right choice still depends on the condition and compatibility of your actual hardware.
For help changing which keys work, ask about our Salt Lake City lock rekeying service. When you call, tell us how many keyed locks you want assessed and whether the current keys are available.
When does replacing the lock make more sense?
Replacement means selecting and fitting different lock hardware. Consider it when an assessment finds that the existing lock is unsuitable, or when you want a feature it cannot provide. That might mean a different type of deadbolt, an updated finish or compatible keyless access.
Schlage’s lock replacement guide covers reasons to review existing hardware, including wear and upgrades. Avoid deciding from appearance alone: a problem that seems to be inside a lock may involve the fit of the door, latch or strike.
For new hardware, review our lock change service in Salt Lake City. If a key sticks or a latch does not engage, discuss lock repair before assuming that every lock needs replacement.
Can all the doors use one key?
Sometimes compatible locks can be set to use the same operating key. Do not assume that every brand, keyway or cylinder can be combined. Describe the visible brand names and send clear hardware photos if requested. Different entrances may also need different access arrangements.
Kwikset’s rekeying support illustrates why product-specific compatibility matters. A feature or procedure for one lock family is not a general instruction for every lock. Follow the instructions for your exact product rather than experimenting with unfamiliar tools.
Compare the scope of work, not only the first price
Ask what the estimate includes: the visit, labor, each lock or cylinder, new keys and any replacement parts. Ask what could change after inspection and how a revised amount will be approved. The total depends on the hardware and the work requested. Ask for an itemized estimate and confirm how any changes will be approved before work begins.
A useful comparison puts equivalent outcomes side by side. Rekeying a working lock and replacing it with different hardware are not identical jobs. Ask whether door alignment or additional installation work needs attention, and confirm that the selected option suits your access needs.
Prepare a simple door-by-door checklist
- List each entrance and the keyed locks on it.
- Note whether the key turns smoothly and the door closes normally.
- Explain which keys are missing and who needs future access.
- Identify any keypad or smart lock by its exact model if possible.
- Ask how many new keys are included and how the completed work will be tested.
For a rental or shared property, confirm who can authorize changes before arranging work. A keypad code, app account and mechanical backup key are separate access methods; changing one does not necessarily change the others.
If you are currently locked out, start with our house lockout call checklist. Restoring access and changing future key access are separate decisions.
